A bunch of graduates from Buxton Athletic Club’s Target 5K group have progressed so much that they recently ran their first ever marathon in Barcelona.
The runners all took up the sport last year via the club’s popular Target 5K plan, an initiative that aims to change lives by helping new and returning runners get fitter, happier and healthier – and become capable of completing a 5K race – after just nine weeks.
Target 5K was first held in April 2015 and since then has supported almost 200 local people with little or no running experience. Many have stayed with the athletics club and gone on to become members and race regularly.
The groups are guided by myself and two other England Athletics licensed leaders, as well as volunteers from the club and past groups.
This has been a fantastic achievement, not only for Buxton AC, but also in encouraging so many people to get active through running. It is changing lives.
